The Purposes of Community Attitude Surveys
Community Attitude Surveys are case specific surveys typically
involving 400 or more respondents and are conducted via telephone
interviews that follow a protocol developed by a jury psychologist.
Purposes of Community Attitude Surveys include: (1) to assess
prospective jurors attitudes about high profile cases
or those with unique issues; (2) to assess prospective jurors
attitudes about the parties in the case; (3) to develop scientifically
based juror profiles that aid in the jury selection; and (4)
to determine whether a change of venue is warranted when there
are concerns about a partys ability to get a fair trial.
Magnus often conducts Community Attitude Surveys as the first
phase of jury research, before conducting Mock Trials. Community
Attitude Surveys provide a wealth of information that cannot
be developed by other jury research methods.
