Pasco County Courthouse,
Sixth Judicial Circuit, Dade City, Florida See
New Courthouse
The 1909 Pasco County Courthouse is located
in Dade City. The courthouse underwent extensive renovations,
beginning in 1994, to restore it to its original appearance.
The imposing brick structure is a fine example of Neo-classical
design. Although a new courthouse has been built, the old
courthouse is still used for county offices.
The Impact of Elderly Jurors
Most attorneys are faced with an increasing number of elderly
persons in their venires and, as a result, an increasing need
to assess their attitudes during voir dire. The debate surrounding
the issue of whether jurors' age has an effect on decision
making began almost 50 years ago. While many attorneys have
traditionally taken the position that age is related to verdict,
numerous scientifically conducted studies have found no relationship
between age and verdict. A recent study, utilizing data from
957 mock jurors in Magnus' Venue DataLink system, found
support for the position that senior citizens are generally
the same as younger jurors in verdict preferences. Case specific
attitudes, rather than the venire members' age, are the key
to knowing which jurors to strike.
